Cambodia, a living classroom

based on a true family adventure

8 nights / 9 days

As captivating for children as it is for adults, Cambodia was described once as a living classroom. It's a wonderful country to ignite a child's interest in old civilisations and foreign cultures. Whether it’s climbing through the snake like roots that engulf temples or spending a fun-filled day at an orphanage in Phnom Penh, or learning how locals fish in the ocean at Kep, your visit to Cambodia will be an enriching experience for the entire family.

Chapter 1
Siem Reap and The Temples of Angkor
Day 1

Upon arrival our guide will pick you up at the airport and we will transfer you to your hotel located not so far from The Temples of Angkor. This particular hotel is very kid friendly. The kids may want to have a swim at the pool. After lunch at the hotel our driver will be ready to take you into town to have a stroll through the streets of Siem Reap before heading back to the hotel where you enjoy an early dinner.

Day 2

After an early breakfast we will be waiting for you to take you to the Temples of Angkor. Don’t forget to put enough sun cream on and let your children wear hats.

Before witnessing the scale of the temple site for yourself it is hard to grasp what’s achievable in a day. With the assistance of your experienced guide, you will be able to dictate the amount of time and the hours of the day you are at the temples. This is important considering it can be hot clambering amongst the incredible structures. To make the visit at Angkor Wat more appealing and interesting for the children they might like to take their own pictures so if you have a camera they can use, make sure its charged! Your children might want a break at some point. The choice of temples today are only a short distance away from your hotel in case you feel the kids might like to return for a swim in the pool.
We recommend you to see three temples on your first day. It gives you a good impression of the history of the Temples of Angkor Wat. The kids can climb, run or simply wander around the many galleries and open courtyards.

3 temples in focus:
Angkor Wat – certainly the most famous of all the Angkor temples and, some would argue the most impressive. The temple, built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II contains three storeys of libraries, galleries and towers surrounded by a thick retaining wall and an imposing moat. Many visitors aim to visit the temple at sunrise to capture one of the most iconic Angkor photos.

Ta Prohm - a temple left in much the same condition as when it was found - creating one of the most photogenic and atmospheric temples of the entire Angkor site. The tree roots of enormous fig trees and gigantic creepers can be seen breaking through the walls and stone carvings. A visit is truly an adventure.

The Bayon - built in the 13th century as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII, standing at the centre of his capital - Angkor Thom. The Bayon’s most distinctive feature is the multitude of huge faces carved into large towers which rise up to form the central peak. The Bayon sits at the exact centre of Angkor Thom and roads lead to it from each of the city's cardinal points.

At lunch we have organised a family pick nick in front of Angkor Wat under one of the many beautiful shady trees. Here you can relax. The kids will be amused when opening the picknick basket, full of delicious gourmet sandwiches, refreshments and funny games to keep them enter taint for a while.

After lunch and a ride back to the hotel it is time for a swim and some relaxation at the hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3

This morning we take the kids to the local market in Siem Reap to see the herbs, spices used in local cuisine and let them do a bit of shopping. There are great local instruments for sale and kids love to try them out!

We then travel out to the countryside where the kids can spot water buffalos and mingle with village children on their bicycles and oxcarts. A picnic lunch is organized on the way. We then visit a Silk Farm, where the little ones witness the art of making silk from growing and harvesting mulberry as food for silk worms.

The day ends with a real treat for the kids: A sunset hot air balloon on a scenic flight high above the Temples of Angkor. On days without wind, we will take you on an elephant ride
through the forest and archeological sites of Angkor Wat. It is a different way to contemplate the temples and for many children this is often the highlight of their stay in Siem Reap.

Chapter two
Phnom Penh with the kids
Day 4, 5

After breakfast in Siem Reap we fly to Phnom Penh. Upon arrival we will meet you and drive with you into town. You will be staying in one of the most beautiful and family friendly hotels in Phnom Penh. Check in, settle into your room and have a snack or lunch. The hotel has a great kid club complementary for all staying guests.
On your first afternoon in Phnom Penh you will visit The Royal Palace. This is a good way of becoming acquainted with the town and its history. Situated on the site of the former citadel and built by King Norodom in 1966, the Palace still serves as the King and Queen's residential quarters. Also within the walls of the Palace is the Silver Pagoda, so called because of five thousand silver tiles that line its exquisite floor.

The grounds in front of the palace are an excellent place for the children to have a play and run around. There are lots of local families that get together for a picnic.

After the visit to the Royal Palace, the whole family embarks on a small boat ride on the nearby river, seeing the floating houses passing by and still catch a glimpse of the beautiful sunset.

Dinner is at one of the best restaurants in town, Pacharan, a Spanish Restaurant not far from the Royal Palace. The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 5

After breakfast, we visit one of the many orphanages in Phnom Penh. This is a fun and positive experience for the children - as well as a hands-on one - both you and your children can participate in the day's activities.
Lunch is at “Friends the Restaurant” a ‘kindness restaurant’ where ex-street children are trained in hospitality and restaurant skills, helping them to break away from life on the streets.

The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Chapter three
The Beach at Kep
Day 6

After a lazy breakfast we head south towards the coast to the small fishing town of Kep. The journey by road will take approximately three hours by car from Phnom Penh. A picnic lunch is arranged for today.
Your residence is an enchanting hideaway, where personalized service gives you a sense of home, family and community. For the rest of the day you can swim and sunbathe or simply sit to watch the sunset and fishing boats returning home with their catch.

Day 7

Today we sail away to Rabbit Island where the kids will enjoy a swim and a barbecue lunch. Rabbit Island is located about 4.5 kilometres southwest of Kep. There are two beautiful white sand beaches. The sea here is shallow and has a long slope, making Koh Tonsay excellent for swimming and snorkelling.

Dinner is served at the sailing club, a former fishermen’s house.

Day 8

This morning we take the kids fishing on a local fishing boat which is fun and interesting for adults as well.

Re afternoon is at leisure.

Day 9

At an agreed time we will be ready to transfer you back to Phnom Penh. On arrival in Phnom Pen you might like to do a bit of last minute shopping at the Russian and Central market before heading for the airport for your onward travel.
